When Lucy Leary turned 18, her life fell apart. She crashed her car, her best friend abandoned her, her parents divorced, and her grandfather passed away, leaving her a single possession A vampire slaying kit with a note that said, “THEY’RE REAL. FIGHT THEM.”

Now Lucy must stop the oldest, most dangerous vampire in history, before it can kill her family.

Praise for “Blood Calling”

“Like with his debut novel, ‘Mercy,’ the vampires are the backdrop to the story, but not what it’s really about. Patterson is pitch-perfect emotionally, giving Lucy the voice of maturity and insecurity that anyone who's ever been a teenager can relate to. The fears about growing up and living and dying and finding one's place in the world cleans off the showiness and sparkles that have been the trademark of YA vampire fiction and gives it characters of grit and substance… I would gladly read more about Lucy and was bummed there wasn't any more.”

-Word Nerd – (bkwriter.blogspot.com)

“Lucy finding out about her grandfather's secret life as a vampire hunter is one thing. Being forced to take it over is quite another. But take it over she does... in style. With ‘Blood Calling’ author Joshua Grover-David Patterson has created a smart and believable heroine who would make Buffy proud. 5 stars, especially if he writes a sequel -- fast!”

-Gabryyl Vaughan - (twitter.com/Gabryyl)

“As the story unfolds and both Lucy and the reader learn more about the world of vampires, both good and bad, the characters begin to come alive right off the page, making this a must read novel. I highly recommend this novel, especially for any vampire lovers out there. Four Stars.”

-A Book Vacation – (bookvacations.wordpress.com)

Praise for “Mercy”

“Joshua Grover-David Patterson writes in a style that will surely connect with many contemporary zombie fans. His use of tone and narrative structure are miles ahead of most who work in the genre.”

-Scott Kenemore, author of “Zombie, Ohio” and “The Zen of Zombie.”

“You expect a zombie novel to have brains, but you don't expect it to be this smart. You expect a number of internal organs to be on display, but you don't expect this much heart. MERCY is a kicka** zombie novel, but it's also a thoughtful, moving story about the joy and importance of being human and alive.”

-Seamus Cooper/Brendan Halpin, author of “The Mall of Cthulhu” and “Donorboy”

Blood Calling The Blood Calling Series Book 1 eBook Joshua GroverDavid Patterson

The book didn't start off too bad. It wasn't a great beginning by any means, but I didn't immediately say forget it and delete it from my library. I figured for the price it could be an okay time-killer.
*Spoiler alert* Chapter 22. (Side note, some of the "chapters" were one and a half to two pages. That doesn't count as a chapter in my opinion.) 'Smitty's Story' That's where I stopped reading. The back story of Smitty, who wasn't even an exciting or curious character, just went on and on and there were actual quotes of what Smitty said. Remember, this is Wash telling the story of Smitty, not a flash back, and that just doesn't add up. I could have ignored that if it had been interesting at all.
I usually have to finish a book once I start it, but I just couldn't.

Blood Calling The Blood Calling Series Book 1 eBook Joshua GroverDavid Patterson Reviews

Ok. It was free so it was worth the read. But was a very slow paced story. And dull. Did not have depth, characters did not pull me in, and seemed sorta pointless at times. I kept waiting for something to happen.
(Potential spoiler alert) The whole "I'm dead so my feelings are dead" was a bit too doomsy for me. I wanted more from the characters, more expression from them but unfortunately they're emotions were numb, which sucks <~ pun intended, couldn't help it.
I will say I'm curious to see if this story will get better in book 2 and I'd like to see if a romance between two individuals will sprout up from basically nothing, that's another thing, no romance really, seems like two people were just thrown together with no foundation of any sort, which just bites (sorry) -.- do I recommend this book? Only if it's free and you enjoy reading for the sake of reading.
I really was interested in reading this because the author advertised a different take on vampires than I have seen before. I love things that are different - blur the lines, and this book does just that. The writing is hip and modern. The characters are beleivable and interesting. The back stories of the older vampire characters are told in a great way that kept me interested.

This is the story of an 18 year old on the verge of adulthood, but still with one foot in her childhood. She is thrown into a new world entirely when she is attacked by a rogue vampire and then rescued by other vampires. These vampires are very different than any I have seen before. They are more vulnerable, and not evil (well, except the bad guy).

I'm very curious where this author is going to take the rest of the series - if you like vampires at all - you should be curious too...
An original concept where vampires are the good guys who end the suffering of humans and are not the cause of it except the evil John Smith who is your more stereotypical vampire who kills for pleasure. I felt like someone was reading me a bed time story most of the time and I found it hard to invest in the characters. Wash was a vampire on the road to redemption running a homeless shelter with odd opening hours. Lucy just turned 18 and scores community service after a DUI offence and then her life is changed forever one night after she discovers that monsters are real. I must admit I prefer a faster paced book and there was no real romance as such. An interesting read with a different slant on vampires and the journey Lucy has when she becomes one. Emma is her mentor who is a snarky two thousand year old vampire born in the time of Jesus who is eternally a teenager with an attitude.
The story is engrossing and the main character, Lucy, is engaging, intelligent and good-hearted in a way we wish all teens of today would be. This interesting take on Vampires and their history, including who they feed on, is innovative. I do not generally read YA literature, but started this before I realized that that is what it was - and became so engrossed, incident want to stop.

Yes, there is a bad guy, who puts the name 'Vampire' to shame. He must be stopped by our hero, her gentle sire and an ancient vampire. There is some improbability (hence the 4, not 5, stars, but the writing is solid the dialogue natural, and Lucy is delightful.

I truly enjoyed this lovely book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet, hopeful story to help pass a couple of hours.
Blood Calling was an okay book. It didn't have a whole lot of depth to it, but I thought it was a very interesting story, with some humor as well.

It's about Lucy, a girl whose whole world seems to be changing. Her parents are getting a divorce, she's turning 18, and she's a senior in high school.

But things really start to change when her grandfather dies, and she finds a vampire hunting kit in his closet. She doesn't know if her grandfather really believed in vampires, or if it was part of him getting old. She soon finds out that maybe her grandfather wasn't so loony after all, maybe he was right and vampires are real.

I did enjoy reading this story. It had a lot of humor, and it was pretty fast paced. The vampires are a little bit different than normal, so that added to the story as well. However the only thing lacking in the book was some major depth to it. It felt like everything was based on a superficial line, and didn't go any deeper. I may want to read more just to see what happens because I really like Lucy. So for a fast paced read about vampires, I do recommend this book.
The book didn't start off too bad. It wasn't a great beginning by any means, but I didn't immediately say forget it and delete it from my library. I figured for the price it could be an okay time-killer.
